Okay. So most likely, I'll be going to this year's Coachella Music Festival. Now, if you've seen the lineup, there are a fuckton of bands playing, and I usually like to get acquainted with the bands I'm going to see.

So, what I need is for my friends (and friends of friends) to help me out here. Below is a list of just about every band playing (so far). From these, pick your 3 (or more) favourites and post them in a comment.

!!!

Air

Erol Alkan

Lily Allen

Anathallo

The Avett Brothers

Benny Benassi

Andrew Bird

Bjork

The Black Keys

Blonde Redhead

Bojones

Brazilian Girls

Brother Ali

Busdriver

Manu Chao

Circa Survive

Jarvis Cocker

Coco Rosie

Comedians Of Comedy

Cornelius

The Coup

The Cribs

Crowded House

CSS

The Decemberists

Digitalism

DJ Heather

DJ Shadow

Roky Erickson And The Explosives

Evil Nine

Fair To Midland

Faithless

The Feeling

Felix Da Housecat

Lupe Fiasco

The Fields

Fountains Of Wayne

The Frames

The Fratellis

Girl Talk

Gogol Bordello

Jose Gonzales

The Good, The Bad And The Queen

Gotan Project

Grizzly Bear

Happy Mondays

Richie Hawtin

Hot Chip

Interpol

The Kooks

Jack's Mannequin

Junior Boys

Justice

Kings Of Leon

Klaxons

Kokono No. 1

Amos Lee

Mika

MSTRKRFT

Willie Nelson

New Pornographers

Nickel Creek

Nightwatchman

The Noisettes

Of Montreal

Ozomatli

Peaches

Peeping Tom

Peter, Bjorn & John

Pharaohe Monche

Placebo

Pop Levi

The Rapture

Mike Relm

Damien Rice

Rodrigo Y Gabriela

The Roots

Satellite Party

Silversun Pickups

Sonic Youth

Soulwax

Spank Rock

Sparklehorse

Regina Spektor

Tapes 'n Tapes

Tiesto

Tilly And The Wall

Tokyo Police Club

Travis

Paul Van Dyk

Julieta Venegas

VNV Nation

We Are Scientists

Gillian Welch

Amy Winehouse

Yeva

I've removed the really obvious choices (and bands I'm already acquainted with), so I can get into some more obscure stuff.

Thanks.

An interesting occurrance at the Hookah Bar.

I don't post that often, unless I've got something interesting to say. Well, here's a funny encounter that merits a post.

Some friends of the family are staying down here in San Diego, along with their daughter Kelsey, who is my age. Kelsey currently has a friend of hers from U of T staying with her in SD, so the three of us decided to go to a hookah bar near the beach.

So we arrive at the hookah bar, a very trendy-looking place, and we stake out a place on the patio. We notice the only other occupied table on the patio, and expecially one of the guys sitting there, an enormous bald Mexican guy wearing a black Raiders shirt that says "FUCK RAIDER HATERS" on the back. Uh oh. So as soon as we take our seats, this guy slides his chair back and starts talking to the two girls. Apparently this place is not really his scene, but his friend, an Eagles fan, won a bet with him, which stipulated that they both had to go to this hookah bar, and he had to pay.

Now, it turns out that before we arrived, the two guys had already had their fair share of drinks. The Eagles fan was a guy named Sanford, who ended up introducing himself to me about three or four times throughout our stay, and the Mexican guy carried the epic name "Rosendo" (epic if you roll the r, in an epic manner), and he was the main source of entertainment.

The conversation was rather polite at first, as Rosendo explained how he runs his own car detailing business, how he's legally blind, so he has to have his own driver, and how he lost a bet, and that's why he's here. (heard that about 8 times) However, things get weirder. At some point, he mentions that he's been to prison, and he even shows us his release card, dated about 2 months back. Oh boy. The girls ask what he thinks is the best tattoo parlor in California. "The best tattoo place? Chino State Prison". Oh my. Later, as Kelsey pulls out her camera, he asks them if they've got any naked pictures on the camera. He even shows us some naked pictures he has on his phone, I supose as a show of good faith for some kind of trade. We say, "She's cute!". He says, "Of course she's cute! You think I'd disrespect my wife with an ugly girlfriend?" Oh boy. At one point, when Kelsey was mentioning about how she kind of had her boyfriend whipped, he called her a "fucking Anaconda!", which was actually pretty hilarious at the time.

Then things got kind of creepy. After leaving for a while to go drink at the bar next door, when "Rosendo" came back, he just sat down and stared at my friend's chest, intently. "You know, you got some phat titties for being such a skinny bitch!" Ohhhh boy. Then he tries to reach over and snap her bathing suit; now it was time to leave. So, we all got up and got the bill inside together. All the time I was really hoping he didn't get break out and start a fight. This guy was HUGE. He could probably fight a tiger and win.

So yeah, that was THAT night. Then as we were leaving we saw a firetruck and two cop cars rolling down towards the hookah bar - I have a feeling he started some shit with someone.

Moral of the story: Stay away from big, drunk, tattooed, ex-con Mexicans.
...Mex-cons?

-Out

Okay, this deserves a second post, even though only a select few will appreciate it.

An excerpt from an interview with my dad: (direct quote)

"As an example, when I was 16, I had two best friends, and every once in a while, one of us would “borrow” the family car to drive from Toronto to Niagara Falls at 2 in the morning. One of the songs that was very popular at the time was called “Last night I didn’t get to sleep at all”, as we were driving home from Niagara falls at 5 in the morning this song would come on the radio, and we would all burst out laughing and singing along with it."

Like father, like son, I guess.

    <lj:music>Stars - Ageless Beauty</lj:music>

One can never tell when night is, when living in the dorms. It's always possible, of course, to take a look outside, but from the level of activity inside, it could be 3pm or 3am - people walking up and down the halls, chatting, playing music. It begins to put you in a strange mood, and eventually, it brings you gradually into insomnia. Of course, it's probably difficult for anyone to sleep after the adderall kicks in, but that's the price we college students pay for quality study time.

This quarter is over in one-and-a-half weeks. Then, a week of spring break, then back to the routine again. I'll be 19 this month, and my prediction is that, like every other birthday, I won't feel any older, wiser, more responsible, etc. However, the thought of being another year older has prompted some fond memories, and some strange emotions. I think back to the amazing times that were had in Mississauga, and all the chances I had to meet interesting and unique people. I think about how I grew with these people, and of course how some of these people drifted away from me, whether by their or my own doing, or just by the series of events that now bring me here to Pomona, California, in a small dormitory, contemplating life.

And here in this dorm I spend a great deal of my time, staring at this monitor. It's usually not to play games, or even to do homework - most of my time here is occupied by Messenger, my last link to those I've left behind. I enjoy talking to all of you through this medium: though it may seem impersonal, it creates a connection between the two worlds in which I exist. That may seem a strange concept to many of you, but that's truly how it feels. The two main worlds I find myself in are the two most obvious: Canada vs. California. But even withing California I feel distanced from my house in Murrieta when I'm on campus in Pomona. The distance is not so large, but I fall into a different school of thought when I'm here, enveloped by pleasant collectivism, where even when opinions differ, they are discussed rationally, and, often, humorously. However, this distance in thought and expression is still trumped by the space between Pomona, California, and Mississauga, Ontario. Leaving my hometown has allowed me to gain an increased appreciation for it. Things that once seemed part of everyday life, things I took for granted, I now long for. It is for all of these reasons that I have a very strange concept of self, that differs greatly in my different environments. It also prompts me to return home, so I may once again see the country and people I love. (Strange, how a sense of patriotism develops out of one's need to defend one's country from slander =P)

To embellish on an earlier thought, there is something that saddens me when I return to visit. I remember back when I lived in Canada, living and growing with my friends. I'd be there for the gradual changes that happened, and they were so gradual that most of us just seemed to change together, as one group. Now, set apart from that group, every time I return I notice so many changes that have occurred in my absence, changes that I wish I could have witnessed and taken part in. It seems to be that only when someone comes here to California can I truly get fully caught up on things. Also, every time I go back, leaving again is the hardest thing to do. I can't even explain to you how hard it is, when I once again immerse myself with the people I love, to leave those people, knowing that I may not see them again for a long, long time. And it has meant so much to me, those last goodbyes, those trips to the airport, just to see me off, all of those experiences that try to prolong the inevitable - and how I wish that I were capable of such a thing.

Now, this is not to say I'm not happy here in California. I'd be on a path to self-destruction if I didn't adapt to my surroundings, so that is what I've done. An analogy, thought up on the spot: Visiting Canada, to me, is like dreaming of a lost love - upon waking up, one feels heartbroken as the memories flood back through the mind, thinking of something that cannot be brought back. However, for the period that you are dreaming, it's the most amazing time of your life. So it is with my visits. Currently, my reality must be here in California. When I visit Canada, I am entering a dream, a vision back to wonderful memories. The people, of course, are real, but my place in their lives has changed. There is a departure from this analogy, of course - unlike a character in a dreamworld, these people can come to my reality - these are truly great times. Greg, Liisa. Brit: You've all come down and spent some amazing time with me. And, in the words of Death Cab, "You and me have seen everything to see, from Bangkok to Calgary." There is no darkness yet, though, but rather a whole life ahead - full of opportunities. And what's the point of life if you don't fight for what you love?

I'll never forget any of the amazing people that shaped my adolescence, and I can only hope that they will do the same in return. To all my friends, and to any family that may read this, if I haven't talked to you in a while, or you haven't talked to me, let's catch up. Life's too short for procrastination.

Signing off,
-Luke

Waiting for something can be seen in two ways, I presume.
1) It's a sense of hope, something to look forward to. Each day brings you closer.
2) It's a sense of hopelessness, where it seems that the time will never pass.

And, since I never post song lyrics in my LJ, and since this is still my favourite song, and since I feel like typing the lyrics to an entire song...

Glycerine

Must be your skin that I'm sinkin in.
Must be for real cause now I can feel.
And I didn't mind,
It's not my kind,
It's not my time to wonder why.
Everything's gone white,
And everything's grey,
Now you're here, now you're away.
I don't want this,
Remember that,
I'll never forget where you're at.
Don't let the days go by.
Glycerine

I'm never alone,
I'm alone all the time.
Are you at one,
Or do you lie?
We live in a wheel,
Where everyone steals,
But when we rise it's like strawberry fields.

I treated you bad,
You bruise my face.
Couldn't love you more,
You got a beautiful taste.
Don't let the days go by,
Could have been easier on you.
I coudn't change though I wanted to.
Could have been easier by three,
Our old friend fear and you and me.
Glycerine (repeat)
Don't let the days go by
Glycerine

I needed you more,
Wanted us less.
Could not kiss, just regress.
It might just be
Clear simple and plain,
Well that's just fine,
That's just one of my names.
Don't let the days go by,
Could've been easier on you.
Glycerine

Also, I've somehow become an insomniac. I can't fall asleep until about 4:00 in the morning, even if I try, and I'm constantly exhausted during the day. Hence my post at this ridiculous hour.

Also, since I haven't posted in ages, I'm curious to see who reads this. Post something, your name (though I most likely already know you), and something funny/cool/interesting/etc. you remember that I took part in.

    <lj:music>the silence of sleeping roommates.</lj:music>

Today I studied a total of about 6 and a half hours for an online Psychology test, watching video lessons and taking notes, reading massive sections of the text and taking detailed notes, and concentrating my ass off. It's really been the first time I feel like I'm taking university seriously. Since I got here, I've been slacking, just as I promised that I would never do in university. Now, this can either be a turning point, or just one isolated incident, and I sure hope I can make it be the former. Anyways, uni is great, except for the fact that I have yet to experience any truly challenging courses, although all my courses are pretty fun, because most of them have been in music.
On another note, I’m facing a dilemma. Music is what I love, and what I’ve always thought would make an amazing career. However, I’m afraid that if I make music my career, I’ll begin to lose interest in it, or even worse, begin to hate it. My second dilemma is this: Music is what I love, and, although creatively challenging, it does not stimulate me intellectually, which means that I don’t work very hard at it. So, do I take a career that is based around what I love, or do I decide to push myself to the edge of my ability? Psychologically, we are most happy when we are motivated and challenged according to our abilities, but then, I’d be constantly motivated by my passion of music, no matter how challenging the career was, because it would be exactly that, my passion.
Now on another spectrum, I feel like I want to do something with my life that would help and benefit others. This is not to say that music does not help people; I know that through the toughest times in my life, there are some songs that really got me through. However, a career in the music business leads to a group of people that are motivated strongly by greed, as well as the exploitation of others: I know this, as I’ve met many of them. It seems, nowadays, that the true desire for creative expression through music is completely overshadowed by blatant commercialism – artists that entered the business hoping to share their talents with the world are seen by the corporations as another cash cow, to milk until their music is so dry and formulaic that it appeals to everyone. At least that’s what it’s turning out to be now. In the early days of music, artists made it only because they had the mafia behind them…and it really doesn’t seem like we’ve got that much of a better situation today.
Well, so there’s my rant on music. So other things I’ve been thinking about recently: Relationships. Though I’ve been avoiding them since my last, I’ve been thinking hypothetically about how both partners should act in a relationship. One thing we’ve all heard is that you have to “love yourself” before you can love anyone else. Also, a girlfriend/boyfriend should not completely take over your world – as good as it feels to complete each other and basically “become” each other, this only seems later to lead to severe tension: jealousy, depression, and dissolution of self-identity. Relationships are best when they are an amazing complement to one’s life. This is not to say that you cannot lose yourself in the moment, forgetting about everything else in life. A lot of people even experience this kind of connection even more with a very close friend – I know I have. So, here’s Luke’s ideal relationship:

1) It starts with a really amazing friendship; I’ve always loved my true friends, the ones I can talk to about anything, and have them truly listen. The most important thing in my ideal relationship is a mutual relationship based on trust, honesty, and respect. A truly deep relationship that makes me want to be with that person all the time, even before a romantic relationship.

2) Once the relationship moves to the next level, it should be seen not as a transition from friendship to a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship, but rather the addition of another layer onto the existing friendship; the two layers will be difficult to remain independent, but ideally the two layers complement each other, creating a connection unlike any other.

3) Well, after 1 and 2 are fulfilled, the awesome part is watching this relationship develop, and learning more and more every day about each other.

A relationship can be the perfect drug, and the comedown’s a bitch. But here’s the surprising reality: we overestimate the duration of our emotions, and underestimate our capacity to adapt.

I don’t think I’m going to edit this post in any way. I like the stream of consciousness style that it follows, and that’s how it’ll stay. I think I might have more to say, but it’s time to sleep. More insight into the mind of Luke in our next episode.

Oh snap. My birthday's this month. I think that calls for a trip back to the 'sauga.

Peace.

<lj:music>Spinal Tap - Listen to the Flower People</lj:music>

So the other day, I was visiting my brother in Malibu, and as we were driving down the road, this deer jumps in front of the car. Well, we slam on the brakes, and he just stares at us in the car, with these red eyes. As it's a narrow road, we can't quite drive around the deer, so we sit and wait for it to move. However, after about 2 minutes, the deer gets up and challenges Jordan and I to a round of hand-to-hand combat! Well, our first thought of course was how a deer was going to participate in hand-to-hand combat, seeing as he possesses only hooves. (Our second thought, of course, being, "Let's punch him in the gonads.") Well, after three and a half rounds of beating, we finally prevailed, and, in the spirit of companionship, took our new friend out for a round at the pub, where he drank both of us under the table.

Freedom of Speech....

Freedom of Speech. What a great amendment! It even came packaged with freedom to assemble peaceably, freedom of the press, and freedom to petition!

Unfortunately, unless this appears after your name--> (R), you don't have access to these rights. Today's bullshit is brought to you by the letter R, for Republican! While my good Canadian friends enjoy the far-reaching protection of speech, American right-wing harpies such as Ann Coulter are allowed to spout out discrimination bordering on bigotry. In order to fully explicate my point, I believe these quotes speak for themselves, all from Ms. Coulter, and verified at Wikisource:

"We know who the homicidal maniacs are. They are the ones cheering and dancing right now. We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity. We weren't punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That's war. And this is war."

"Being nice to people is, in fact, one of the incidental tenets of Christianity (as opposed to other religions whose tenets are more along the lines of 'kill everyone who doesn't smell bad and doesn't answer to the name Mohammed')"

"To The People Of Islam: Just think: If we'd invaded your countries, killed your leaders and converted you to Christianity YOU'D ALL BE OPENING CHRISTMAS PRESENTS RIGHT ABOUT NOW! Merry Christmas."

"When we were fighting communism, OK, they had mass murderers and gulags, but they were white men and they were sane. Now we're up against absolutely insane savages."

"It would be a much better country if women did not vote. That is simply a fact. In fact, in every presidential election since 1950 - except Goldwater in '64 - the Republican would have won, if only the men had voted."

(On expatriate Pakistanis) "They're never very high in anyone's caste system, are they? Poor little Pakis."

(On Canada) "They are lucky we allow them to exist on the same continent."

Feel free to post your comments regarding Ann, Republicans, Democrats, Myself, etc.

    <lj:music>Sum 41 - No Reason</lj:music>

At the risk of turning this into a political "blog" or something of the like, here I go:

Every night, my stepmother watches an extremely conservative opinion piece on MSNBC. Usually, I just let her roll around in her own republican propaganda, but tonight I realized something rather ridiculous. Three members were on the panel, and the topic was the war in Iraq, and its effects on the people of Iraq, more specifically, the women. Panel member #1 was an Indian woman (with a british accent, of course) defending an Amnesty International report claiming that women were worse off now under America then under Saddam. Panel member #2 was the worst woman ever, this ridiculously pro-Bush, pro-(everything the current Republican government does) kind of gal. And, panel member #3 was an Iraqi woman on the governing council. The highlight was when panel member #2, in reference to "charges and allegations" of rape listed on Amnesty's report, claimed that such allegations were "Un-american". Okay. So, it seems to me that "Un-american", a term with very strong negative connotations, has come simply to mean "Un-republican", or perhaps "Un-brainwashed". Why has it become "Un-american" in this country to criticize your government? Like, sure, I'm not American, but as a resident of this country, I too fall under the protection of the first amendment, so I'll say whatever the hell I want. And, if what I say happens to be critical of George W, the republicans in this country, or any action taken by the American government overseas, ESPECIALLY when such comments have evidence to support them, I certainly don't consider myself "Un-american". So, in conclusion, Buck Fush.

Also, this is rather amusing: Why America Sucks.

EDIT:

(This might be Un-American)
